Application for Extended Leave - Travel

Exemption from attendance can no longer be granted for students travelling for reasons such as a family holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons during school hours or terms.  If you wish to apply for Leave for students travelling then the following rules apply:

(a) All absences for the above reasons will be treated as Leave (L).

(b) Where students are absent from school for more than 10 days, families must complete and submit to the school both an Application for Extended Leave - Travel Form, Form A1 below and a Certificate for Extended Leave - Travel, Form A2 below.  Download and complete as much as possible of both forms.  Submit both of these forms to your child's House Coordinator.  The House Coordinator will present the application for Leave to the Principal for approval.  The Principal will either approve or deny the application for Leave.  The Principal will sign and issue the Certificate indicating whether Leave has been approved or denied.  If Leave is approved, the student must keep this certificate with them at all times on their leave from school.  It is a legal requirement that the student be able to produce the certificate for an appropriate authority eg police.

Note that the Principal is the only authority at the school who can legally sign the Certificate for Extended Leave.

Note also that all applications for Leave MUST be submitted to the school in plenty of time to allow the school to process the paperwork and issue the Certificate to the student.  If the period of proposed Leave is less than 50 school days the application must be submitted to the school at least one week before the leave is due to start.  For periods greater than 50 days, the application for Leave must be submitted to the school at least three weeks before the leave is due to start.  This is because the application, if approved by the Principal, must then go to the CSO for final approval.  Applications that do not adhere to these requirements will be declined.

(c) Where students are absent from school for 10 days or less for the purpose of travel, families must inform the school in writing (letter, note, email) at least one week before the leave is due to start.

Difference between Exemption from Attendance and Leave

An exemption from attendance cannot be back-dated.  If you wish to be considered for an exemption from attendance you must make application for exemption before the period of leave commences and wherever possible in plenty of time to allow the school due time for considering and processing your application.  If exemption is granted your leave from school will not count as official absences.

If you apply for Leave and it is granted your absences will be counted as official absences from school.  If your explanation of the reason for leave is not considered adequate by the Principal, your leave will be counted as an "unexplained absence". The Principal is legally entitled to refuse to accept an explanation for absence as appropriate or adequate.

If you need advice on any aspect of attendance or taking leave from school please contact your child's House Coordinator.
